IMPedia – Mission, Vision & Values
Mission
As a Swiss non-profit, the Institute of Medical Procedures (IMP) operates IMPedia, a multilingual platform for the global exchange of surgical knowledge. Our mission is to provide freely accessible, structured, and role-based surgical know-how via our web and iOS app. The application assists surgical teams in designing, planning, execution, documentation, and analysis of standardized surgical workflows.
We aim for the democratization of surgical expertise, making high-quality procedural knowledge available to all roles, promoting equal opportunity and inclusion with barrier-free access to relevant knowledge for all learners.
Our digitalization approach is bottom-up: we focus on those performing procedures — from scrub nurses to surgeons — and create solutions that fit real workflows, making IMPedia a practical tool that bridges training and practice.
Vision
We envision a world in which surgical knowledge is not a privilege, but a shared, global resource, accessible to everyone involved in the care and safety of patients.
Through digital innovation, we aim to:
- Reduce avoidable adverse events in surgical settings
- Empower professionals at all levels, from students to surgeons
- Facilitate interprofessional communication and collaboration
- Strengthen procedural clarity and teamwork across cultures and healthcare systems
- Build a foundation for competence-based, equitable surgical education worldwide
Values
1. Open & Collaborative
We believe in open knowledge sharing and cross-institutional collaboration. Surgical expertise should flow freely between individuals, institutions, and regions.
2. Practical and Applied
The platform is designed for use at the point of care: before, during, and after surgeries. It prioritises clarity, accessibility, and real-world usability.
3. Global but Localised
While we build global infrastructure, we work in partnership with local teams, contexts, and languages — both with respect to the application language and with regard to automatically translated content.
4. Non-profit, Impact-driven
As a Swiss non-profit dedicated to eliminating paywalls around surgical knowledge, our goal is impact, not profit.
